Buckley incorporated as a town of Pierce County in 1889, but was founded in 1882 under the name Perkins Prairie. In 1884, it was renamed White River Siding, after the nearby White River, and in 1888, it was again renamed Buckley, after J.M. Buckley, the National Pacific Railroad’s Division Superintendent. 

In the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Buckley was a major supplier of coal and lumber in the region. Today, it is a sought-after suburban residential community, attracting discriminating residents who love the wonderful blend of small town living and easy access to urban conveniences.

Many residents are engaged in computer and engineering, management, and protective services. Within Buckley, social assistance, educational services, and healthcare are the biggest industries.

    Just nine minutes from Buckley is St. Elizabeth Hospital in Enumclaw, WA. Also in the vicinity are other healthcare facilities, including Enumclaw Health and Rehab Services, and Franciscan Medical Clinic – Enumclaw. There are also a number of senior care services in the area. 

    Buckley is home to Rainier School, a state-run healthcare facility for people with developmental disabilities.
